Six Officials Punished For Gambling With Public Money

Making off with someone else’s money seems quite the fashion these days. Raju in India, Madoff in America, and now half a dozen officials from Guangdong.

The twist to their story is that they gambled away 22 million yuan of public money — at the casinos in Macau, on cruise ships off Hong Kong and betting on football matches.

China Daily reports that six of 50 officials that were investigated have been jailed or punished, including Wu Xingkui, Party  number two in Yunfu, who got four years for embezzlement. He was said to have lost 520,000 yuan  on football bets and 70,000 yuan playing mahjong, plus thousands of yuan more of  public money while on a cruise in Hong Kong in 2004.

Seems the anti-corruption drive still has a ways to go.
